Charlotte Perriand

(French modernism designer)

Charlotte Perriand was born in October 24, 1903 in Paris France and she died in October 27, 1999. Charlotte Perriand is considered as a pioneer of the modern architecture and furniture design in France. She is also known as one of the most influential figures in architecture and interior design of the 20th century. (1)

Charlotte studied in L’Ecole de l’Union Central des Arts Decoratifs from 1920 to 1925. From the beginning of her professional career, she demonstrated her audacity innovating and designing modern furniture focusing in functionality as a new way of living. Successfully accepted by the critics, in 1927 she created a bar under the roof made of anodized aluminum and nickel-plated copper, which she showed in the “Salon of Automne” that year. That same year at the age of 24, Charlotte started to work with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. (The design studio was at 35-rue de Sevres Paris). Her contribution to the projects promoted by le Corbusier is seen as a distinct touch of humanness to the often-cold rationalism of the architect. This avant-garde group of designers was the creators of the revolutionary tubular steel system furniture that they presented successfully with the name of “Equipement de l’habitation” at “Salon d’Automne”of 1929; some examples of their functional designs are: “Basculant B302”, “The chase longe B306”, “Grand Confort B302”. During her long career, Perriand was a designer that constantly evolved in her aesthetic line of design. Thanks to her ten years of contribution and work with Le Corbusier and then her long period living in the far east (Japan) from 1940 to 1946, Perriand could experience different periods of creativity, discovering and experimenting with the use of new and different materials, from the tubular steel furniture to a more expressive naturalism. Later on her professional career, Charlotte started with important commissions by French and foreign leading companies always-developing balance and original products. Her design philosophy was to “create functional living spaces in the belief that better design helps in creating a better society” (1,2,3)

“In every important decision there is one option that represents life, and that is what you must choose… life is something in motion”. (2)

Nowadays her designs are highly demanded and valued in the design market; the prestigious house of design “Cassina” has the exclusive rights to Perriand reproduction in Cassina I Maestri collection. (2,3)

Charlotte Perriand was an authentic passionate designer of her work, always loyal to “the principles of humane and innovative rationalism”. Considered today as one of the founders of modernism contemporary lifestyle. She is and will continue serve as a great inspiration for future designer generations. (1)
